About this site

This project was put together to help patients get used to their new diets. When my dad started dialysis, we had new dietary restrictions in addition to those from his diabetes. It took my mom and myself a long time to learn what we could make for him. It didn't help our learning process that his targets would change depending on his blood tests.

At first, it felt like nothing was allowed. As time went on, we realized that actually a lot of things were allowed, though we had to learn how to be moderate. We had to re-learn how to go grocery shopping. We became experts in which brands of which products had lower potassium and phosphorus.

My goal with this site is to help you feel out the possibilities. If your nutritionist gives you a new diet, you can do it. I hope to help you get some new ideas. I also hope that this can help family members plan for gatherings such as weddings or thanksgiving. You can tell your relatives that for dinner, you are allowed certain amounts of various nutrients, and this site can give them ideas of menus for a meal.

Lastly, and very importantly, I am not a nutritionist. I know a little bit about how to program, and I wanted to make this site because it would have been helpful for my family, so I hope it can be helpful for others. That means that nothing you get from this site should be construed as medical advice in any way. Even the nutritional information, which as of now is entirely sourced from the USDA's website should ideally not be trusted blindly. Read the nutritional facts on the products that you use. These can be different between brands. I have no idea which brands of different products the USDA used to get these numbers.
